Country dancing was popular in Britain and America from the 1600’s though the early 1800's. If you've ever watched a Jane Austen film, such as Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility, you have seen English country dancing. Scottish country dancing, or Reeling as it was known then, was extremely popular in Jane Austen's time.
If you can walk and know the difference between left and right, you already have much of the basic knowledge you'll need. Dancers stand in lines across from their partners and move in a number of specific figures in time to the music.
Partners are not necessary; you can come by yourself and be assured of dancing throughout the evening, since the tradition is to change partners for each dance. For regularly scheduled country dance classes, please wear casual attire and soft soled shoes. For the Jane Austen Dance evening dress is requested.
SNOCD sponsors English and Scottish country dances several times a month in Las Vegas. Please see our schedule of upcoming dances for exact dates and times.
